before the session / newborns and kids sessions

Please arrive on time for your session to ensure you are ready to go right on time. Children can be dressed at the session to avoid last minute messes, but please ensure they are dressed and ready to go at the scheduled session time. You are welcome to bring several outfit changes to your session, but keep in mind children normally get agitated with each change.

Your session will last between 60 and 90 minutes. I strive to keep your session as stress free as possible. If I feel I have gotten the shots I need or your children are done, I will let you know. It is helpful for me during a session if parents stay a small distance away (sometimes completely out of sight of the children) rather than trying to help get them to smile. This usually results in children looking out of the frame.

When children are having a hard time with the session, it is sometimes helpful for parents to leave and let the children simply interact with myself and each other. I love to capture those candid moments and it can give them the space they are looking for. If your children seem overwhelmed, it’s best to take a quick break and let them regroup.

DON’T WORRY, most parents feel like their kids are not cooperating and the final images won’t be good. You will be SURPRISED !

fun. fresh. funky – the looks

One of the most important, while difficult, decisions to make when planning your session is your clothing. Whether its planning for a family, a senior, a newborn or your children, there are some things to keep in mind.

The only hard “rule” I have is to choose outfits that reflect your personality and really make you FEEL amazing. Don’t wear anything uncomfortable, even if it “works” because you’ll be thinking of nothing but getting it over with. There are some guidelines that can help when choosing clothing for your session, but remember, almost anything goes.

Many clients find it easiest to build an outfit for one person based on the below rules and build from there.

The traditional portrait ! If you want that traditional family portrait look everyone should match. Yes ! If you choose a black top and jean, everyone ! Including the dog should wear that ! Ok, maybe not the dog :). Keep in mind that simple earth tones work best for fine art portraiture. You may opt for brighter colors for a more playful look. But remember, everyone must match !

Harmonize using patterns and colors. Everyone should NOT match. Yes, I said please do not match everyone. Matching is easy, but coordinating is funky and fun. It allows each individual to be unique, and it makes the photographs much more interesting. Patters, colors and textures can complement each other without clashing. Mix it up a little and add some excitement to your images! Pair patterns with a solid accent to focus less on the pattern. Adding texture with lace, wool, denim or corduroy. No need to advertise with graphics and logos!

Layers, Layers, Layers…. and accessorize!
Add your favorite necklace, jacket, hat or scarf. This goes for ALL. Spice up your session with some visual interest and change, without changing outfits. Stand out with your favorite headband, belt or piece of jewelry. Hats and headbands are perfect for kiddos too.

Trendy, AND timeless. The thing about fashion is that it goes out of fashion. Keep “trendy” under control and pick some pieces that are timeless. Wear clothing that fits with the locations we are shooting at. Girls, leave those heels at home if we’re heading to the woods. While this can work, it has to be the look we are going for. Keep in mind the season. Shorts and tankini’s don’t belong in winter. It’s also helpful to plan your session with your home in mind. If you want a large canvas for your living room, coordinate colors with the décor of that room.

Props. This is an easy way to make your session different, unique, and most importantly, a reflection of YOU. Bring your child’s favorite toy, or incorporate your families’ favorite hobby. This doesn’t have to be cheesy. It can simply mean shooting at your favorite park, or as far as doing a “themed” camping shoot for that outdoorsy family. Bring any items that you think might work for your family.

Women. You will need a little more make-up than normal, but don’t go overboard. Wear powder over foundation and be sure to bring it in case you get some “shine”. This is difficult to fix in images. Don’t forget your lip gloss!

smash cake session ! what to bring and wear

We capture the “what is this sticky substance on my finger” and the “mmmmm SUGAR” faces followed by the full cupcake hand squeeze. Introduce your kid to sugar in front of the camera and see what fabulous faces we capture.

Bring your own cake  – we recommend colorful cakes with lots of frosting ! Google some smash cakes and get creative ! Be prepared for the cutest photos of your child’s lifetime.

Please bring a short sleeved white onesie, tutu or a diaper cover for the photos – we want to see some baby skin!

after the session / post-processing & ordering

Following your session, I selects the best images for processing and retouching. I devote time to carefully compare the hundreds of images from your session to select the best ones from each concept — based on facial expressions, posing, lighting, sharpness, and overall appeal. These images are each individually processed and enhanced into a true work of art.

Approximately 1 week following your session, I invite you to my home studio for your proofing session. This presentation will be an emotional experience, after which you will be able to select the images you would like to order for your home, office, family and friends. I will consult you on options for displaying your portraits in creative and beautiful ways.

A contract and model release are required for every session. This protects you as the client and me as the photographer. This model release will be signed at the time of your session.

If you need to reschedule at any time, please contact me right away, a 48 hours notice is required in order to reschedule. Your deposit is non-refundable.

Online viewing is not an option for previewing portraits since monitors vary in color and brightness. Online viewing is not the best representation of how beautiful your portraits are.

All images ordered will be archived for 1 year and re-prints can be ordered at any time. Images not ordered will be deleted after 30 days of your viewing session.
